This weekend in Japan, Square-Enix hosted an exclusive event called "DKΣ3713" where it unleashed a plethora of new information about virtually all of its Final Fantasy properties. While some good news certainly came out of the event, not all of the news was quite so positive. In brief, here are the announcements that were made:
The Blu-ray release of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children will come packed with a demo for Final Fantasy XIII when it is released in March 2009. The Blu-ray disc will also be featured in a new PS3 bundle. The Japanese version of Final Fantasy XIII will be released in 2009.Development of the Xbox 360 version of Final Fantasy XIII has only just now begun, as Square-Enix only received its development kit "a few days ago." North American and European gamers will not only have to wait for the localization of the title on PS3, but also the potentially-lengthy porting time for the Xbox 360 versions, as Square-Enix wants to release the two versions simultaneously in the west. This could potentially mean that Westerners won't see FFXIII until 2010.Final Fantasy Versus XIII has been confirmed as a worldwide PS3 exclusive.Fighting game Dissidia: Final Fantasy is coming December 2008 alongside a new PSP bundle with the game.Once a mobile phone exclusive, Final Fantasy Agito XIII will be coming to PSP.A new PSP Parasite Eve spin-off called The 3rd Birthday is coming.
The delay of the PS3 version of Final Fantasy XIII in North America comes as a devastating blow to PS3 gamers who were already disheartened by the loss of exclusivity of the title. While the company's localization periods have been growing shorter and shorter with each numerical release, Western PS3 owners can pretty much rule out the game's release this year. More details will follow as Square-Enix's American branch relays further information.
